THESE ARE POWERS
"All Aboard Future"

These Are Powers formed in 2006 with ex-Liars bassist Pat Noecker recruiting percussionist Bill Salas and vocalist/guitarist Anna Barie. As These Are Powers are comprised of one-third of Liars one can expect for them to sound just that tiniest bit weird and off putting. They seem to blend eerie and ramshackle sounds into a post-no wave genre that they have self-proclaimed to be "ghost punk."

Despite being one of the most loathed bands in the New York indie music scene, thanks to their over-loud noise-rock and electronic tech approach, These Are Powers have managed to release three albums in their short lifespan along with sporadic 7" and split releases, the most recent being with The Creeping Nobodies who played here last October.

Their most recent album, All Aboard the Future, has adopted a more electronic and dubstep tone becoming less art rock and much more darker, sinister and industrial. At times I thought I found myself listening to the next clubland classic only for the song to quickly shift, faster then the downturn in the economy, into a skuzzy, dirty drone with the wailing of Barie, akin to a banshee, laced over the noise in what could easily be placed in an old horror movie.

These Are Powers bear similarities to both Gang Gang Dance and Black Dice as they warp both sound and noise into a cocktail of audio pleasure. Along with the aforementioned two acts, they're a band for fans of Liars, Sonic Youth, Battles, Wolf Eyes and Throbbing Gristle.
