VARIOUS ARTISTS "Even Better Than That Disco Thing" (RMG)
five / ten - for the music |
Even Better Than The Disco Thing is a follow on, yet new take, on the Even Better Than The Real Thing compilations that Today FM have been responsible for over the last numbers of years. And while ... The Real Thing saw various artists tackle cover versions of their favourite pop songs, '...The Disco Thing', as the title suggests, sees another host of various artists engage themselves in turning their hands at disco classics.
I guess before I continue this review, I must state that all proceeds from the sales are in Aid of The National Children's Hospital and Barretstown. This is also something I had to keep in mind while trying to stomach some acts I genuinely have no time or taste for ... like Brian Kennedy and The Blizzards! Contributions from the likes of Lisa Hannigan ('Upside Down' by Diana Ross), Duke Special ('I Feel For You' by Chaka Khan), Jack L ('Staying Alive' by Bee Gees) and Jape riding Donna Summers 'Hot Stuff' make this all worthwhile however, as the aforementioned attempt to make the song their own by applying a bit of imagination and personal style to the tune.
The rest of the covers see the bands and singer songwriters stick close to the original working of the song. You can also imagine my disappointment to learn that the Kevin Doyle who appears on here covering 'Get Down On It' by Kool and the Gang, isn't the Irish football international Super Kevin Doyle! How unfortunate!
It's a double disc with CD1 housing 16 takes on disco classics while CD two is a mix disc of cd one... for all you partaaaay peeeeoooople out there no doubt. Even comes with a foreword by everyone's favourite muppet Ray D'Arcy. As I stated earlier the pro-ceeds of the sales of the album go to some deserving charities so if you have a few left over vouchers from your Christmas presents do them a favour by checking this album out.
