ALL THE SAINTS "Fire On Corridor X" (Touch And Go!)
seven / ten |
I have to hold my hands up and admit to never hearing of this band previously, but seeing as it's their debut full length album maybe I'm not so out of the loop as I first thought. To be perfectly honest, it was the classic American independent record label that this album is on, that drew my attention to this review CD. Having housed such glorious and legendary bands such as Butthole Surfers, Big Black, the Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and TV on the Radio amongst many others, I had a good hunch that this band must have had something going on for Touch & Go to bother with them in the first place.
And in all fairness to All The Saints, while they play what's generally classified as rock, they've come up with a great little mix of shoegaze and psychedelica to offer something that little bit different. The start could throw you however as 'Shadow Shadow', a brief, yet eerie laid back instrumental eases the album open before the avalanche of loud shoegazing psychedelic glory descends.
While walls of volume and noise construct their songs, there's melody and tunes buried in there that push their way to the front at the right times. Despite hatching in Alabama before developing in Atlanta, GA they have a huge British sound and it's no coincidence that song titles 'Leeds' and 'Sheffield' - places they pass on their drive to Atlanta - correlated with the names of cities in England. Committed anglophiles to the last. Fans of My Bloody Valentine, The God Machine and A Place To Bury Strangers will lap this record up.
