LAST DAYS OF DEATH COUNTRY INTERVIEW
Last Days of Death Country seem relatively new to the Limrock scene but these guys have been keeping low key as they perfect their one of a kind sound. They have done gigs around Limerick and across Ireland, and as of late are frequenting the stages more and more. With Patrick O'Brien on vocals, he adds to the bands intense sound, pouring more salt into the wounds infflicted by love but with every song has a seed of hope too. Along with Dave O'Dowd on guitar, Gary Lysaght on bass, and Rob Kelly on the drums, they complete their unique sound and add all their individual musical taste to the band. I sit down with 3 of the 4 members to get an insight into the band and music they create together.
How long have you been together?
How did you guys get together? |

GIVEAMANAKICK EXCLUSIVE LAST EVER INTERVIEW
Limrock royalty Steveamanakick and Giveamanakeith, announced in the Autumn of 2009 that they were to call it a day after the 7-year long success story of the noise-tastic duo. They played a string of last-ever shows in their favourite venues and cities; from Waterford to Cork, Dublin, Mullingar and Galway, all building up to their last gig of all time, in their hometown of Limerick, at Dolans Warehouse. While many dreaded the countdown to the last ever show, it unfortunately and unavoidably, had to come sooner or later. It was an emotional time for all involved and attending, as this was the end of an era for the alternative Limerick music scene, and the end of a large chapter in the lives of Steve and Keith. Our Crude cameras were there to capture it all, from the moment they opened their van doors to load in, right up till they said 'good night' for the very last time.

NOLAND FOLK RELEASE SECOND ALBUM International folk-rock troubadours NoLand Folk are proud to announce the release of their second album, 'Ghosts Light The Scene', on the 18th December in the Shannon rowing club, Sarsfield Bridge, Limerick. This follow-up to debut Never Going Home (2007) sees the band embark on a new course, articulated by some |
major changes in line-up. Recorded in the paludal hinterland of Co. Clare, 'Ghosts Light the Scene' is a tour de force of folk-rock using violins, accordions and guitars interwoven with an elegant, more electric setting to create a lush musical backdrop. What ensues is a vibrant, energetic and fearless set of songs.
Drawing from life experience and folk tradition moreso than outside influences, 'Ghosts Light The Scene' tells a story of revenge, cacoethes, love, loss and dispossession. It marks the end of an old way, and the beginning of a new journey for this lonely ship... Now on tour across Ireland, be sure to check them out! www.myspace.com/nolandfolk |

HOPE IS NOISE - 'UNDER FRIENDLY FIRE' REVIEW
Veterans to the stage, Cork's Hope Is Noise newest long player entitled 'Under Friendly Fire' has just been released, and if you're a fan, or couldn't be too bothered to care... this album is surprising in every sense of the word. From the moment you press play you're engaged, and from the moment it kicks in, you're hooked. |
I've been a fan of Hope Is Noise quite a while. Their first album 'Applaud Friends... The Comedy Is Over' was released in mid 2007 to much critical acclaim. With such hits and personal favourites as 'Lions Led By Donkeys', 'Subtitles' and 'Two Gods Short Of My Trinity', it's always a tricky little issue and worry if the next album will have the same success or more of its predecessor.
Fortunately 'Under Friendly Fire' has reinvented the band, in a good way, but without losing the charm they've always had. Produced once again by Ciaran O'Shea (ex Cycle Fly), this 10 track album sounds crudely polished... Read More >> |

The response and demand for the magazine has gone beyond my expectations, as I started it just to be a Limerick City magazine, which later spread to provincial, then national... But it is just unfortunate that we're in this current economic climate. Due to lack of advertising funds, I've been forced to place [crude] magazine's print publication on hiatus. We will be continuing online however. Interviewing people in all areas that we previously covered, in text and video format, thus creating the online video magazine. We will also gladly post up any articles / images / reviews / illustrations by new or current contributors.
I've chosen to take this step back for a number of reasons. No Irish publication gives a focussed view on Irish alternative culture and talent, and I believe that this is too important a publication to simply disappear. Therefore I did not wish to drill myself into the ground financially, and since i've been running this magazine, in a lot of ways, single handedly, I did not want to exhaust myself physically and mentally. Over the next while, we will continue to grow, making contacts and building a team for [crude] to make an significant return when the economy gets that bit better. Easons, who jumped on board to distribute the latest issue, know of our situation and have been very helpful and understanding, and have agreed to continue national distribution upon crude's return.
As for press releases, news and music up for review, please continue sending them in! We still have many great articles, reviews, videos and competitions on the way... so stay tuned and get in touch!
I hope you all understand, and i'm really sorry that I couldn't continue putting out all your quality articles, reviews, photography, illustrations, crosswords, comics etc... If you would still like to feature on our website, just say the word! - i know it's just not the same as in print :(
Take care. |
